What is a Mala?

An Instrument of Concentrated Awareness

The word mala means "garland" in Sanskrit. A traditional mala contains108 beads — a number sacred in Hindu, Buddhist, and yogic traditions, representing the 108 names of the divine, the 108 energy lines converging at the heart chakra, or simply the perfect number for cycles of mantra repetition.

Used for japa (repetitive mantra practice), a mala anchors the wandering mind to the present moment. Each bead becomes a breath, a prayer, a step on the path. Over time, the beads absorb the vibration of your practice — becoming charged with the energy of your devotion.

Every Crystal Mala
Begins with a Conversation

Spanda has spent years studying the energetic properties of crystals, the philosophy
of japa practice, and the ancient art of mala-making. But what sets him apart is his
belief that a truly powerful mala cannot be made without first knowing
the person it is for
.

Before he begins crafting your mala, Spanda invites you to a personal video call —
a sacred conversation about your intentions, the areas of life you're working with,
and what energies you wish to invite in. From this, he selects stones, chooses
patterns, and begins a creation that is entirely and uniquely yours.

Past Malas by Spanda

Every mala is designed for one person, one intention. No two are ever the same.

Your mala will be designed from scratch — just for you.

Working with Your Mala

Begin Your Practice

A mala is a tool — and like any tool, it becomes more powerful with consistent, intentional use. Here's how to make it yours.

🤲
Hold It Correctly

Hold your mala in your right hand, draped over your middle finger. Use your thumb to move from bead to bead, one repetition per bead. The index finger is traditionally not used, as it represents the ego.

🕉️
Choose a Mantra

Begin with a simple mantra — "Om", "Om Namah Shivaya", "So Hum", or the mantra recommended in your Palm Leaf Reading. Repeat silently or aloud with each bead, staying present with the sound.

🌅
Establish a Rhythm

Morning practice is ideal — the mind is quietest before the day's activity begins. Even 10 minutes of japa each morning with your mala will begin to shift the quality of your awareness over time.

Questions

Frequently Asked

The Rudraksha Mala is a traditional mala made from authentic Rudraksha seeds sourced from sacred sites — including the Amma Ashram in Amritapuri and the holy mountain of Arunachala. It is a time-honoured tool for mantra practice, available as a ready-made mala shipped directly to you (€35, incl. shipping & VAT). The Crystal Mala by Spanda is a fully bespoke, handcrafted creation. It begins with a personal video consultation with artisan Spanda, who then hand-selects semi-precious crystals and crafts the mala specifically for your intentions and energetic needs (€197, incl. shipping & VAT).
Our Rudraksha beads are sourced directly from sacred sites in India — specifically the Amma Ashram in Amritapuri (the ashram of Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi) and the sacred mountain of Arunachala in Tamil Nadu, one of the holiest sites in the Shaivite tradition. These are not commercially farmed beads — they come from places where the land itself is steeped in devotion and spiritual practice, which we believe is reflected in the energy of the mala.
The Rudraksha Mala ships within a few days of ordering and typically arrives within 1–2 weeks depending on your location. For the Crystal Mala, Spanda will contact you to schedule your consultation call, after which the handcrafting process begins. Please allow approximately 2–4 weeks from consultation to delivery.
No special preparation is needed — just come with an open mind. If you already have a Palm Leaf Reading, you might reflect on the themes or remedies it highlighted, as these can inform the crystal selection. Most importantly, be ready to share what intentions or areas of life feel most significant to you right now.
Absolutely. Many people begin their practice simply by breathing consciously with each bead — one complete breath per bead. You can also use simple affirmations, silent prayer, or just the repetition of "Om". If your Palm Leaf Reading recommended a specific mantra, your mala is a perfect tool for establishing that practice.
Yes — both malas are shipped worldwide. Shipping costs and delivery times will vary depending on your location and are calculated at checkout. My Palm Leaf serves clients in over 45 countries.
Keep your mala clean and treat it with respect. Avoid getting it wet for extended periods, especially for crystal malas. Store it wrapped in cloth or in a small pouch when not in use. Many practitioners keep their mala on their altar or in a sacred space. If you feel your mala needs cleansing, you can place it in sunlight or moonlight for a few hours, or use sound (a singing bowl, for instance) to refresh its energy.
